Internet Safety

The internet has huge potential as a source for education but the can be hidden (and not so hidden) dangers.  It is possible to keep children safe through the application of a number of basic guidelines.  Parents are inclined to worry about internet stalking and related activity but there are probably more basic matters that should concern them.

  1. Supervision
    • Parents need to supervise all children of primary school age on the internet. An awareness of social networking sites and how children use them is also essential. Many parents ensure that computers are located in a family room that is easily and constantly supervised. Laying down ground rules such as the amount of time allowed online, etc. is also an important safeguard.
  1. Advice and Education
    • Parents need to be informed of the pitfalls of social networking and to educate their children about the internet.   Parents have a major role in teaching children that they should never engage in cyber-bullying.   (The ISPCC is promoting the inclusion of a “Panic Button” on sites such as Facebook so that children who are victims of Cyber-bullying can report it quickly and effectively).
  1. Filtering Software
    • Although nothing can take the place of well-informed parents who take an active part in their children's online activities, internet filter software adds a strong, additional layer of defence, giving parents an added measure of control and peace of mind.
